The Opportunity
Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences is a recognised centre of excellence in the UK and has established a national and international reputation for the quality of its academic and research work in the areas of sport and health sciences. Based across the Cyncoed and Llandaff campuses, we provide a broad range of vocationally focused academic programmes and pride ourselves on good student feedback and excellent graduate employability. Many of our programmes are professionally accredited to meet the requirements of the sport and healthcare professions and we engage closely with industry to provide consultancy services and professional development programmes. Our School also delivers a thriving research culture, with over 100 PhD students across a variety of disciplines. The wellbeing of our staff, students and our local community underpins everything we do as we continue to add value through our teaching, innovation and research.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
You will be required to make a contribution to the delivery of our taught portfolio contributing to the delivery of our BSc in Sport & Exercise Science and MSc in Sport & Exercise Science. Enthusiastic about student-centred pedagogy, you will contribute to education delivery, including programme management as required, across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
You will be joining a Cardiovascular Physiology Research Group with a strong track record of publishing high-quality research. You will be expected to develop and run your own research programme that should complement or add-to the existing interests. This will include the ability to publish high quality research, the expectation to supervise postgraduate researchers and the desire to apply for Research and Innovation funding.
You will be expected to contribute to the wider research culture of the school, and the qualitative and quantitative requirements for submission to the next Research Excellence Framework.
What we are looking for - Experience & Strengths
A good level of knowledge relevant to the subject and professional area.
A sound understanding of pedagogy.
An ability to produce high-quality research, with the potential to attract grant funding
Ability to develop teaching and/or research programmes and the provision of learning support.
Ability to employ appropriate assessment methods.
Ability to identify areas for improvement and to use initiative and problem-solving skills to improve performance.
Ability to communicate and disseminate complex and conceptual ideas in a variety of ways – presentations at conferences, reports on findings, publications, feedback etc.
Experience of supervising students undertaking research projects.
Experience of providing academic leadership and first line support/mentoring for other colleagues.
You will be an enthusiastic and friendly professional with excellent communication and interpersonal skills coupled with a commitment to providing an excellent student experience. You should have an established or emerging research profile in the field of Cardiovascular and Exercise Physiology that will complement the existing research excellence within the discipline and School. Having a track record of high impact research and desire to apply for research and innovation funding is essential.

A good honours degree
Doctoral qualification
Ability to achieve Fellow Status as part of the Higher Education Academy’s Professional Recognition scheme, within agreed timescales (as soon as is practicably possible and definitely within three years of commencement of employment).
